Castro Smith Jewelry

EAST LONDON - Castro started training as a painter and printmaker and his work is inspired by history, myths and biology. He studied with one of the largest engraving firms RH Wilkins to learn his technique, 'seal engraving', which goes back to ancient times. A seal is always engraved in reverse and is much deeper than traditional two-dimensional hand engraving with a third or fourth dimension added which is deeper and finer and takes much more time to achieve. He uses his knowledge of engraving to create contemporary pieces and to experiment with European and Japanese engraving techniques.

Castro Smith's Artistic Journey

Castro Smith began his artistic journey as a painter and printmaker, channeling his passion for illustration into his jewelry designs. Based in London, Smith took a different career path when he applied for an engraving apprenticeship in Hatton Garden, London's historic jewelry district. His training with the Goldsmiths' Company and RH Wilkins provided a solid foundation, where he mastered the basics of tool maintenance, workshop upkeep, and the intricate art of engraving. Over time, Smith developed his tools and techniques, merging his illustrative style with the craftsmanship required in jewelry making.

Techniques and Themes in Castro Smith Jewelry

Castro Smith jewelry is renowned for using the ancient "seal engraving" technique. This method, which engraves designs in reverse to create a deeper, multidimensional effect, adds a unique depth and texture to his pieces. Traditionally used for signet rings to stamp family crests into wax seals, Smith has adapted this technique to modern designs infused with such intricate detailing that they seem to come alive. Themes and techniques in Castro Smith jewelry include:

  • Illustrative Style: Included painterly elements inspired by his background in printmaking.
  • Mythical and Biological Inspirations: Incorporated creatures and elements from historical myths and natural biology.
  • Cross-Fertilization of Styles: Blended European and Japanese techniques to create innovative and contemporary pieces.
  • Handcrafted Tools: Castro Smith makes his own engraving tools to accommodate the niche nature of his craft.
